I was born three years ago at a house out in the country. I had two sisters and two brothers. We loved our mother because she took good care of us. She couldn't walk very well because a mean man hit her with a stick and broke her leg. I guess the man didn't like us either because one day I heard him say he was going to "take us off." That sounded scary.
He put all six of us in his car and then drove somewhere. We didn't know where. Then, all of a sudden, he stopped and put my sister out on the side of the road by a big house. Then he went to the next house and put my brother out. I was beginning to get scared. Then he stopped again and put me out at another house. Then he left. I don't know where he took my other brother and sister.
Now I was really scared. I didn't know what to do. I decided that the best thing I could do was to go to the house and hide. So I did. I hid under this big wooden thing. Then I felt a little better.
I guess I had been there for about two hours when I heard someone drive up and get out. It was a man in a red pickup truck. I didn't know what to do, so I decided to come out so he would see me. When he did, he picked me up and talked to me and petted me. Then I felt a lot better.
He carried me in his house and gave me some food and water. I looked at him and wagged my tail because I was hungry, I was real hungry. I hadn't had anything to eat in about three days. I decided then that maybe I had found a good home. Later that day, a lady came to the house. I thought that must be the man's wife. Right then I decided to call them Mama and Papa. Mama carried me to the doctor the next day to make sure I was okay.
I liked my new home. Mama and Papa took good care of me. I had plenty of food and water and toys and treats. And when it was cold, they would let me come in the house.
It was fun to live there. A nice little girl and her brother lived in the house next door. I played with them a lot. They had some cats that I wanted to play with but they would just run off and climb up a tree. That looked like fun. Papa would go out walking and would let me go with him and when he went somewhere in his pickup, he would let me ride with him. That was my favorite thing to do. My brother lived down the street and sometimes he would come to my house to see me. Papa liked to play with him and he liked to play with Papa, too.
When I was about two, we moved to a new house. I had lots of room to run and play. Some real nice people lived next door and I liked them. They would pet me and play with me and give me treats. It was fun to live there, too. And that's why I think I'm so lucky.
But I worry about my other brothers and sisters. I don't know what happened to them. I hope they have food and water and a warm place to stay when it's cold. Maybe they do. Maybe they're lucky like me.

"And God gave Man charge over the birds of the air,
the fish of the sea, and every living thing
the fish of the sea, and every living thing
that dwelled upon the Earth."
